Legal Aid Council Safeguarding Citizens’ Rights Under Enhanced Security Measures

Executive Director of the Legal Aid Council, Hugh Faulkner, has reiterated the agency’s commitment to safeguarding citizens’ rights, particularly while enhanced security measures are being administered in some communities to curb crime.

He said that as the Government implements measures to ensure public safety, the Council has a duty to play its role in preserving individuals’ fundamental rights.

Denham Town Residents Benefit from Legal Aid Mobile Unit

Residents of Denham Town in West Kingston today (February 21) benefited from the services of the Legal Aid Council’s Mobile Justice Unit.

The Unit, which began operations in January 2017, provides free consultation and advice, and completes court assignments for clients with criminal matters.

Legal Aid Representation for State of Emergency Detainees

The Legal Aid Council is providing legal representation for persons who have been detained under the Limited Public State of Emergency declared on Thursday January 18, 2018 for the parish of St. James.

The Legal Aid Council in collaboration with Cornwall Bar Association has made available 19 Counsels, including six (6) Senior Lawyers to provide representation for the detainees.

The Government of Jamaica is committed to ensuring that all Jamaicans can access quality legal representation, irrespective of their financial resources.

To this end, the Legal Aid Council was established to provide legal services to members of the public who have been charged with criminal offences and especially to those who are unable to afford private legal representation.

Legal Aid Council Hosts Justice Fair March 29

The Legal Aid Council will host its quarterly Justice Fair in Kingston on March 29 at the Half-Way Tree Transport Centre.

This event will provide Jamaicans with the opportunity to receive free legal advice.
